Manhattan Review began in New York City in 1999 by Joern Meissner, who at the time was a venerated doctoral student and educator at Columbia Business School. Meissner received consistent praise from his students for his practical explanations of complex ideas. As a result, a group of these students thought that his style of instruction would be ideal for Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) preparation, as in those days GMAT prep was boring and mundane. Meissner went on to devise a series of GMAT lectures that incorporated his trademark method of teaching. Early returns were remarkably positive, and these lectures would become the early foundations of Manhattan Review's first test prep classes.
