The city of Port Elizabeth's most important institution for higher education is Nelson Mandela University, which was founded in 2005 through a merger of the University of Port Elizabeth and Port Elizabeth Technikon. Originally called Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the school was officially renamed Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in 2017. The university's current enrollment consists of about 23,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students, who are pursuing professional or vocational training at the school's seven campuses (six of which are located in Port Elizabeth). NMU is the site of the Nelson Mandela University Archives and Exhibition Centre, which makes a variety of historically significant collections available to the public. Several of NMU's programs have appeared prominently in the national, continental, and world university rankings, such as its degree offerings in business and in plant and animal science. NMU is also known for a community that is friendly to international students, who make up approximately 11% of the student body.
The economy of Port Elizabeth is built on trade, industry, and tourism. The city is one of South Africa's most important seaports. The Coega Industrial Development Zone, next to the Port of Ngqura, is a facility that accommodates export-oriented manufacturing, and it has brought a substantial amount of foreign investment to the region. Automobile building is Port Elizabeth's most significant contribution to the manufacturing sector. A number of international auto companies (including Volkswagen South Africa and General Motors) as well as firms that provide services to these companies (such as Goodyear and Johnson Controls) are located in the city. Now I am preparing for my GMAT tests. The course books Turbocharge Your GMAT and Official Guide For GMAT are very helpful. I think the combination of these two books is very good. What I like the most about Turbocharge Your GMAT course is Vocabulary lists. The other books don't provide such lists, but for me as a foreigner it is very important to learn the words that may appear in GMAT. For example, I was afraid not to understand a task in math section or to misunderstand it, and not to give correct answer to relatively easy question just because I didn't understand the data or the question. But after I learned Math Vocabulary list I very seldom misunderstand a task. Now the hardest GMAT task for me is Reading comprehension, because my vocabulary sometimes is not enough to understand a text, especially if it is historic matter. So now I am learning words from Vocabulary lists. Now I study hard every day, because I realize I am at a disadvantage in comparison to test takers, whose native language is English.

Meet a Port Elizabeth Tutor: John C.
John C. has been teaching on-site and online group courses and individual tutoring for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for the past eight years. A New York City native, he has been living and working in Port Elizabeth since 2017, where his teaching helps local students accomplish their goals of graduate school attendance at universities in the United States and other countries.
John graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of arts in English, and he also holds a master's degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania. Before relocating to Port Elizabeth, he was an English teacher at a prestigious private high school in suburban Connecticut. His favorite hobbies are playing rugby, studying foreign languages, and internet video gaming.
